At the foot of the castle hill it is worth looking at the fortress, of Arab origin, and today a remodelled and inhabited manor house, which controlled the passage to the fortress. The fortification on the south and west sides of the hill still has a patrol path, with a whole defensive system of battlements and arrow slits. But the most outstanding feature is the keep, which had four floors inside, as well as a cistern at the bottom to take advantage of the rainwater.
Its historical importance was fundamental in controlling the neighbouring Kingdom of Granada, which was taken over by the Order of Santiago from 1242 until the conquest of the city of Granada in 1492.

Access to the fortress is free and can be consulted by calling the Nerpio Tourist Office, 967 43 81 70, for the opening hours of the museum located inside the keep.
