The abbey of San Galgano (in Italian, abbazia di San Galgano) is a religious building, located a few kilometres from Siena, in the municipality of Chiusdino.

The construction of the abbey began around 1220 and was long: the consecration took place in 1268 and marked the beginning of Gothic art in Tuscany.

It was protected and generously benefited by the emperors Henry VI, Otto IV and from the same Frederick II who always confirmed the privileges granted adding little by little others, including the right to mint coins. Pope Innocent III exempted the abbey from paying the tithe.

The wealth accumulated in the Cinquecento was such that it triggered a confrontation between the Republic of Siena and the Papacy. In June 1506 Pope Julius II issued an interdict against Siena because he had proposed the papal candidate Francesco da Narni to Cardinal de Recanati for the allocation of the abbey’s benefits. In what could be defined as a political-simonious issue, the Republic of Siena, led by Pandolfo Petrucci, resisted by ordering priests to regularly celebrate all liturgical functions.
