History of Castillo de los Velez

Castillo de Los Vélez is a medieval-renaissance castle located in the town of Mula (Region of Murcia, Spain). The building was built by the Marquis of Los Velez at the beginning of the 16th century as a way of subduing the Murcian town.

The origin of the current castle is situated when Pedro Fajardo y Chacón, a leader of the kingdom of Murcia and Marquis of Los Vélez, was humiliated in 1520 when the Muleños rose up in community, making him swear the privileges that Fernando III gave to the town after his conquest in 1244. Thus began the long lawsuit of the council against the feudal regime of the Marquis, who reacted by building a new fortress to ensure the submission of the town.
